Our Little Man Turns 5
I expected myself to begin this entry complaining about how old I am feeling because our baby boy, Isaac, has turned five years old. Surprisingly, I find myself feeling the opposite. I realize this morning how Isaac continually reminds me of what it was like to be a child. I watch him discover the world, define who he is, and am filled with the wonder of those years. It doesn’t hurt that the sounds and smells from my childhood are constantly filling our home. He loves old cartoons like He-Man, Scooby-Doo, and Tom & Jerry, he is happy playing with a stick and garbage can lid, and grilled cheese sandwiches never got old. Awe, the simplicity of childhood.
This is probably the last year where Isaac’s understanding of ‘party’ is simply cake and presents. Once he enters the school years, his expectation of a party will expand dramatically. So we decided that a a simple family celebration was in order. What better way to celebrate how ‘big’ Isaac is getting then risking his life on some rickety carnival rides operated by sleepy and mildly incompetent carnies!?! Yes, that actually seemed like a good idea to us. In the end, Isaac had a blast and we were able to savor a few more hours of pure childhood joy.

Look at the sweet face!
And our very feminine tom-boy…chewing gum of course!
Okay, I had to include this. With Mike’s eyes closed + Aubie’s face doing who-knows-what + Isaac making a silly face = Awkward Awesomeness.
Weeeeeee!
Because the operators were falling asleep (I am not lying), the rides lasted a good 10-12 minutes each. Fun for those on the ride, but poor Mikey couldn’t believe how ridiculously long it took!
The kids couldn’t get enough of the big slide.
Anytime my mom would tell Isaac to smile, he would strike this hands-on-hip pose. Adorable!
So this ride was like the teacups at Disneyland….only suspended in the air and spinning in circles as you pin yourself. Mike spun those kids so fast that they almost barfed! He had the blisters the next day to prove it!
Face painting! Of course, the birthday boy had to get his ENTIRE face done….It was an impressive choice.
After the carnival, we headed home for cake and presents…
I love the smeared face paint in these. Classic.
Of course the boys had to play with every toy as Isaac opened it. Mike looks so dashing in that child-size shark helmet!
Ahh, yes…..A father teaching his boy how to aim and shoot his first shotgun. So natural.
Thanks for allowing us to share this with you. We’d love your feedback. Leave a comment!

Hey you guys! I didn’t know Kanzlerfoto existed until I received a copy of Andrew G’s latest CD. I love the photos of the kids! I cannot believe how big and beautiful they have grown! Thanks so much for sharing the birthday fun. The kids are gorgeous.

Loved seeing my great nephew’s birthday celebration….y’all need to come visit us in Seattle someday! We will show you the town! You could even travel about 5 hours to see Auntie Karine, Uncle Sam, Grampa, and Casey!
